Commissioned by Sea Darwin, written by Heather King and illustrated by Shelley Keast, Mimih the Mindil Beach Mermaid is a story book designed for the 3 – 10 year old age group. Mimih is a sea creature who has evolved from the spirit of the top end saltwater. She lives off Mindil Beach in Darwin, and spends her time frolicking around the Harbour and the Arafura Sea. This story includes important messages. In the context of magic happening, young readers are introduced to the absolute majesty of real top end sea creatures, all the while being made aware of the impact that marine pollution can have on the coastal environment. The story features Bare Sand Island and the Austurtle researchers, and with carefully produced resources, the book is an ideal and fun way to impart important message to young minds. To complement the story, and for young readers, Shelz has created colouring pictures that can be downloaded. There is Mimih, Barangi the dolphin, the flatback turtle, the manta ray and the sawfish. There are also word scrambles to download and labelling activities. For readers, there are many useful resources on the web that can be accessed to further their knowledge of the marine creatures and the message of Mimih. The Northern Territory Government, the World Wildlife Fund and the Coastal Dolphin Research Project all have developed fact sheets on dugongs, marine turtles, sawfish, coral reefs, dolphins and marine debris.
