2012 Turtle Tours up and away

2012 Turtle Tours up and away

We had a fabulous trip to Bare Sand Island on Saturday 14 April 2012 for the traditional clean up tour. The boat was chockers full of eager helpers, including return eco warriors and Austurtle members, as well as some interstate visitors. Local artist Aly De Groot came along and collected some material for her sculptures. It was a “frisky” trip in and out of Darwin Harbour with a stiff north easterly creating some white horses, especially around Charles Point. Surprisingly we collected only one quarter of the volume of last year. Captain Jim says that this is because the wet season storms have not been as brutal this year. All the marine debri collected will by collated and logged, with the information sent to the World Wildlife Fund for their international marine debri research project. As usual, we were treated with an untagged old lady plodding up the beach after dark to see what we were up to. She had such a long way to go up the beach with the neap tides. Dion, our head Turtle Guide was thrilled to see significant nesting activity on the island so early in the season. The sand dunes were speccy, rippled with wind trails making a magnificent back drop for the sunset. A great start to the season, our first official Sea Darwin Turtle Tour scheduled for next weekend.
