Destination: Fannie Bay Sandbar in Darwin Harbour

Destination: Fannie Bay Sandbar in Darwin Harbour

One of Darwin’s iconic destinations is the sandbar that sits proudly above water on spring low tides close to Cullen Bay. Roughly every fortnight for up to 7 days the sandbar emerges, to the delight of locals who use the expanse of sand for all manner of pursuits, including beach cricket, charity events, weddings, parties, anything really. The Fannie Bay Sandbar is a unique Darwin Harbour cruise for those who have a spirit of adventure and want to experience the real Darwin.

The Sandbar’s changing character is dependent on the tide. It can be a teeny weeny bit of beach teasing the sailors who anchor near by. On big springs, it can gallop for more than a kilometre around the bay. It has been there forever, there are Larrakia stories of times gone by which are a little more exotic than current day tales of sunken barbeques engulfed by the racing tide.

Sea Darwin is all about local, and the sandbar is one of our favorite destinations on both our Sunset Fish’n Chips cruise and Let the Tide Decide. With clever planning, we can organise any event ranging from Sundowners on the Sandbar, to a Corporate lunch, and recreational events in between. The Snubfin is the perfect vessel to use for your sandbar experience, with easy beach loading over the bow, a toilet, and a fully licenced bar on board. Want to know more? See our Let the Tide Decide page or our Sundowners on the Sandbar page.
