Darwin Sunset Cruises – Show Off Moments

Darwin Sunset Cruises – Show Off Moments

We’ve done the research for you and compiled our top five Darwin Harbour sunset experiences for your Top End bucket list! Darwin Harbour is undeniably the best place to watch the bright, tropical sun sink beneath the horizon as mesmerizing bands of yellow, orange and red colour the sky. All these experiences offer a crazy-good, infinite number of Instagramable possibilities, and as a bonus they’re provided by local Darwinites, who know how to show off their salty seascape better than anyone else. What’s not to love…

1. Sunset on the Sandbar.

Jump on board with Sea Darwin on its Sunset Fish ’n’ Chip Cruise and allow Captain Jim to offer up some saltwater therapy. On a few special occasions each month, this cruise calls in at the Fannie Bay sandbar, allowing you to watch the often-breathtaking sunset on a little island in the middle of the harbour. It’s perhaps the most unique of romantic experiences – and, yes, there have been proposals and weddings on that little strip of seduction! Sea Darwin sunset cruise takes place every night, except Thursday, during the dry season, and on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the wet season.

2.Sunset and Soul.

Meet Captain Chris aboard Streeter, a 65ft pearling lugger, one of only two working luggers in Australia. With an immaculately varnished wooden deck and brass work boasting such clear reflections you can do your hair and makeup in them, this old dame of the sea exudes a lifetime of soul, sun and swank. Featured in Malcolm Douglas’s movie Follow the Sun, Streeter is like a movie set for the perfect picture. And if you privately charter her, consider having local catering company Soul Bites provide a delicious (and photogenic) grazing feast of flavours, textures and treats - to eat with your eyes as well as your mouth. Streeter offers BYO sunset cruises during the dry season and is available for private charter year round.

3.A Kate-Winslet-in-Titanic Moment

There is something very special about embracing a tropical sunset with outstretched arms from the bow of a yacht - like Kate Winslet’s character Rose in the romantic blockbuster film Titanic - don’t you think? Captain Les welcomes passengers aboard one of the newest sunset vessels on Darwin Harbour, Kuru, a seawind 1160R catamaran that offers sunset cruises year round. Offering an all-inclusive BBQ meal and drink package, Kuru provides the perfect platform to sit back and enjoy the end of a tropical day, Darwin-style, in complete relaxation. With a choice of custom-built lounging zones, cushions, trampoline nets or that prize position on the bow, on this Darwin sunset experience you’ll feel a million miles from care!

4.Sunset Seafood

Is there a better place than a Darwin sunset cruise to have your taste buds seduced by local, wild-caught seafood? Absolutely not! Book your cruise on Cape Adieu and you’ll meet Captain Shane, an ex-Top End commercial fisherman who knows more about our fishing industry than King Neptune himself. Cape Adieu boasts oh-so-fresh, wild-caught, territory seafood (or prime fillet steak if you prefer), featuring mouth-watering menu items such as hickory-smoked Spanish mackerel and banana prawn platters. If a longer cruise is not your thing, then Sea Darwin’s sunset fish ’n’ chip cruise is short, snappy and also dishes up fresh, local, wild-caught fish. As a special seafood bonus on Sea Darwin’s cruise, on Sunday and Monday evenings there’s a chance you’ll meet a Masterchef, with Darwin’s “Queen of Seafood” Rachael Ciesiolka preparing the day’s fresh catch and personally delivering it to the Sea Darwin cruise at Fisherman’s Wharf.
