There is always a sense of anticipation in arriving on Bare Sand Island after the last of the wet season storms have lashed the sand dunes. This year a not so stormy wet season meant that there was little change to the shape of the dunes that we last saw in October 2014.
As the clouds start to form and first rain hits the sand-dunes on Bare Sand Island, we know that our 2014 turtle tours have come to an end. And what a year it was, with memorable events and precious moments, some captured on camera and others not.
The leatherback sea turtle is the world’s largest turtle and the November update of the IUCN Red List, contained good news regarding the status of the turtle, changing from critically Endangered to Vulnerable.
The Territory Wildlife Park’s first flatback turtle release is scheduled for Saturday 25 May 2013. You can be part of this unique event, as Sea Darwin is offering two seats to the person who is successful in naming the flatback.
A large population of flatback sea turtles nest at Bare Sand Island during the winter months. During this time, researchers gather data on the nesting turtles to estimate population size, monitor abundance and to determine any threats to survival.
