At Sea Darwin – Sea Tiwi, we are passionate about showcasing the incredible culture, history, and landscapes of the places we visit. To celebrate our expansion into the Tiwi Islands, we are thrilled to launch an exciting social media competition. Each month in 2025, we will be giving away a unique, handcrafted Tiwi Masked Owl figurine, created by the highly regarded Tiwi artist, Mario Munkara.
Mario Munkara, from Wurrumiyanga on Bathurst Island, is a respected artist whose work is deeply rooted in Tiwi culture and tradition. Mario has spent years perfecting his craft, using locally sourced ironwood and traditional ochres to bring each Masked Owl to life. These owls are not just stunning pieces of art; they hold significant cultural meaning. The owl is a guardian spirit, symbolising wisdom, mystery, protection and the power of the night. Today, the largest population of the endangered masked owl species resides among the forests of Melville Island, making this cultural icon even more special.
How to Enter the Giveaway
Each month from February to October 2025, one lucky winner will receive a stunning Tiwi Masked Owl figurine. Entering is simple:
- Follow Sea Darwin – Sea Tiwi on Facebook or Instagram.
- Tag at least one friend in the comments of the giveaway post, alternatively comment as per giveaway post request.
- Use the hashtag #SeaDarwinSeaTiwi for a bonus entry.
The giveaway runs from for 14 days following the giveaway post, with the winner announced by the 15th day following the giveaway post.

Eligibility:
- Open to Australian residents aged 18 and above.
- Participants must follow Sea Darwin – Sea Tiwi on Facebook or Instagram.
Winner Selection:
- A winner will be chosen randomly from all eligible entries.
- Each winner will receive one hand-crafted Tiwi Masked Owl figurine, valued at $300.
- Winners will be notified through their social media tag.
- Sea Darwin - Sea Tiwi will arrange for the Masked Owl to be delivered to winning participant.
